'Ersatz' describes something artificial; usually a disgenuine imitation of something. We imitate in order to replicate something we value: usually something functional, sometimes something aesthetic. To call something artificial implies that it mimics something we know to be 'real'. Can the product of imitation exist on its own, or only in the context of its source-material? When does something cease being a representation and become its own entity?
